Grounded. Articulate. Real. These are three words that come to mind when describing Danielle Rose Russell. This talented and beautiful actress is a star on the rise with roles in the film WONDER and The CW’s The Originals and with projects acting alongside seasoned actors like Julia Roberts and Donald Sutherland. In conjunction with the DVD release of WONDER, we chatted with her on her experience filming WONDER, what she’s looking forward to in the rest of 2018 and what’s she learned from being an actor.
What was it like to be a part of the WONDER movie? I remember turning to my mom in the car when I got the email to audition and saying ‘I am going to be a part of this.’ I loved the story so much. And filming it was one of the most incredible experiences I have had. Everyone on the set was like a family and everyone was extremely passionate about the project and about the work that we were doing.
WONDER follows the story of the Pullman family, specifically Auggie, and the people around them. Auggie is a boy born with facial differences, so when he enters elementary school the story basically follows his journey through the year.
This story really proves that it doesn’t matter if you are different or unique. Those are the qualities that are most special about you and you should learn to embrace them. It is a story about kindness and acceptance and I think it makes the world aware of the bullying that really does occur.
What have you learned most from being an actor? Being an actor has taught me that it’s not a sprint—it’s a marathon. And the sooner you learn that the better. Embracing the journey is extremely important because one day you are going to look back and wish that you had embraced every single moment—both the ups and the downs. You are never just going to reach a point and say that’s it. It is totally the process.
What other young actor would you love to work with? I love Zendaya. I think she is a great role model for both young women and young men. I think that as a young person and a young actor in this business that she really knows how to use her platform.
What’s up for you in the rest of the year? I am finishing my last year of online high school now and I’m going to do online college. I love to read (in bit of spare time that my schedule allows!) and my goal this year is to read more of the classics; I’ve just started Huckleberry Finn. I also have The Originals returning in April and another movie, The Measure of a Man, coming out in May.
