We loved catching up with authors Lindsay Cummings (The Death Code), Robin Constantine (The Secrets of Attraction), Jaye Robin Brown (No Place to Fall) and Paula Stokes (Liars, Inc.) on their SSBB (Southeast Summer Book Bash) Tour!
Can you describe your book(s) in six words or less?
LIARS, INC.: Dark but fun twisty murder mystery. – Paula
NO PLACE TO FALL: Girl with dreams, banjo boy, shenanigans. – Jaye
THE DEATH CODE: A bloody, futuristic assassin love story. – Lindsay
THE SECRETS OF ATTRACTION: A girl with a guitar. – Robin
Well done! OK, if you were writing a spinoff, which secondary character in your book would you write about and why?
I’d love to do a spinoff with Jazz, who is one of Madison’s BFFs. She’s very level headed and analytical in all aspects of her life except romance. She craves a big, swept off your feet Hollywood type romance, but is too much of a realist to let herself collapse into that. I’ve touched on her attachment to romance movies in both The Promise of Amazing and The Secrets of Attraction, and I’d love to follow her through her own romance, breaking down what she thinks should happen as opposed to what happens in real life. I think that would be a lot of fun. – Robin
I would love to write about Sketch—a fabulously snappy, quick-witted female character who fights like a dream. Lindsay
I would write about Max’s girlfriend Parvati. She’s smart and strong and resilient, three traits that make for a fabulous female protagonist. We also only see her through Max’s eyes in LIARS, which is kind of unfair to her because there’s a lot going on beneath the surface that helps explain some of her actions. – Paula
C.A. aka Cheerleader Amber. She is so happy and upbeat even after a divorce between her parents that devastated her. I’d love to know her path to being so positive and grounded. – Jaye
What’s your favorite literary world?
I really love the world of the chimera in Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone Trilogy. – Jaye
Harry Potter always. So magical!! – Lindsay
Me too! Harry Potter! – Robin
OK, then I’m going to resist the urge to answer Harry Potter and say my current favorite world is the one Victoria Scott portrays in Fire & Flood and Salt & Stone. I love the idea of a race across four different geographic landscapes and the genetically enhanced animal companions are the most fun idea ever! I want my own Pandora…or two or three 🙂 – Paula
To close, it’s the Southeast Summer Book Bash Tour , so what do you like most about summer?
I love snowcones, laying out by the pool with a book, and most of all, I love summer book tours! – Lindsay
I love driving to the Oregon Coast and hiking along beaches and tide pools. Summer is great because you can watch kiteboarders out in the water and dogs playing on the beach. – Paula
Summer is freedom! It’s watermelon and lime popsicles. It’s sundresses and swimming holes! Summer is awesome! – Jaye
I don’t think I’ve ever lost that “school’s out” feeling when summer comes around! I love the feeling of freedom and the ability to slack off a bit. Also – trips to the beach! – Robin
We can’t argue with any of that! And just in case you haven’t heard of all these books, here’s a quick peek…
The Death Code by Lindsay Cummings: With short, fast-paced, alternating point-of-view chapters, The Death Code starts several weeks after The Murder Complex ends. Zephyr keeps the secret about Meadow close that if she dies, The Murder Complex will be destroyed, too. Meadow, desperate to find her brother, father, and little sister, is determined to fight fearlessly to the end, even if it means sacrificing herself and her friends, new and old.
The Secrets of Attraction by Robin Constantine: Madison, whose life is turned upside down by a family friend’s visit, and heartbroken guitarist Jesse, who is trying to find the inspiration to write music again, form a friendship that soon grows into romance.
No Place to Fall by Jay Robin Brown: Sixteen-year-old Amber Vaughn dreams of attending the North Carolina School of the Arts to gain confidence in using her amazing singing voice, but her family’s falling apart and she’s torn between two boys.
Liars, Inc. by Paula Stokes: Seventeen-year-old Max, his girlfriend Parvati, and best friend Pres for Liars, Inc., expecting that forging notes and lying for their peers will lead to easy cash, but when Pres asks max to cover for him, it may be a fatal mistake.
