Meet Kerri Medders, 15-year-old singer/songwriter chasing her dreams and inspiring her peers along the way! With a new, feel-good EP, ETCHED, and more music in the works, we’re naming Kerri “one to watch.” See what this inspiring songbird has to say about her journey and check out ETCHED for yourself here!
Justine Magazine: Did you always know you wanted to be a part of the music industry?
Kerri Medders: I always wanted to be involved in music, ever since I was really little. I remember being about nine years old sitting outside, sketching out a music video and then I wrote a song around it.
JM: For those who may not be familiar with your music yet, how would you describe your new EP, ETCHED? What’s the vibe?
KM: The fact that you used the word “vibe” gets me excited because at my live shows I always start off by saying the goal is to just feel the vibes. I call my music “vibey-pop.” You can hear hints of Charli XCX, Halsey and Taylor Swift throughout my EP.
JM: Do you have a favorite song on ETCHED that we should keep an eye out for?
KM: “Morning Coffee.” I wrote this song on my own and went into the studio with a clear vision of what I wanted it to sound like production-wise. It’s a big step in my career and it’s a song I am super proud of and can’t wait for people to hear.
JM: What’s your favorite memory of being in the studio working on this EP? Hardest part?
KM: My favorite memory would have to be working on this as a producer, as well. I loved being so involved in the entire process of creating ETCHED, from song writing to producing it. A lot of my ideas and who I am as an artist shine through each song. One of the harder parts in creating music is constantly hearing other artists’ new music and wondering if what you’ve created is enough. It’s incredibly difficult to find a strong sound that defines you as an artist and is different from the rest. I think right now I’m at a great starting point and can’t wait to continue this journey.
JM: You write your own songs, but where does your inspiration come from?
KM: My inspiration sparks from memories and events that have happened in my life. That’s why I titled my EP ETCHED—events that are in your memory that sometimes you try to forget but can’t. Recently, I’ve been trying to use my imagination more, which isn’t as easy as it sounds!
JM: If you could collaborate with any other musician, who would it be?
KM: It’s almost like asking a donut enthusiast, “What’s your favorite donut?” There’s so many to love! I would love to collaborate with Ed Sheeran or Lewis Watson. They both have such amazing voices.
JM: What is it like being a 15-year-old student and managing a successful music career?
KM: Being brutally honest? It’s hard! I’m so passionate about my music. I find myself getting lost in lyrics and new sounds when I should be studying for a test… oops! My creative juices are constantly flowing and ideas for new songs come at the most random times.
JM: What’s your next move?
KM: It’d be great to hop on a tour as an opening act to show the world ETCHED. For now, I’ve been focused on writing and throwing around new concept ideas for more songs. Stay tuned!
