The Rose Society is the second book in the Young Elites series. It tells the continuing story of Adelina who is essentially the teen, female version of Darth Vader, following her continuing journey into darkness and how she becomes a super villain. In the first book, Adelina started off as a fairly decent person who had a lot of bad things happening to her. She finds herself in a very down point, the beginning of her journey to darkness. In The Rose Society Adelina gets revenge on all the people who have wronged in life, setting up the question for book three: Can Adelina be redeemed for all the things she has done?

Which one of your characters do you most closely relate to?
In the Legend series, I related a lot to Tess who is the best friend of Day on the streets. She was similar to the way I was when I was a kid. She’s very shy and insecure. That’s very much who I was in high school, so I relate to her a lot. In Young Elites, this is going to sound kind of unsettling, but I do relate to Adelina a lot. I feel for her journey, and I feel sorry for her and for all the things I’m doing to her. Obviously, I don’t react the same way as she, but we all have those moments in life when you’re stuck in traffic or cut off in traffic and you just want to destroy someone! I’m glad I don’t have powers, so I don’t do that on the spot! There are those moments when I feel weakness and I just want to get back at people who have done terrible things. I have to remind myself that that’s not the right way, so I do feel bad for Adelina in that respect. I feel like she has been dealt a bad hand of cards in life.

What are your top three favorite books?
Okay, I’m going to cheat and do series! One of them has to be the Harry Potter series. I was part of the generation that grew up with Harry as he was growing up, so I have to pick Harry! Another one is Watership Down by Richard Adams. It was one of my favorite books of all time as a kid. Then I’m going to go with Mattimeo by Brian Jacques, part of his Redwall series. It was the book that got me into reading fantasy and science fiction.

What theme song would you pick for your books?
For the Legend trilogy, I always go with “Final Countdown” because I feel like that fits it! It was on my playlist when I was writing. For The Young Elites, I’ll go with “Sweet Dreams.” I feel like that song fits really well with Adelina’s mindset. I guess a lot of 80s songs!
