This workout warrior is fitness royalty, drawing inspiration from mom, health mogul Denise Austin, and she’s giving Justine readers her insight on getting in shape for 2017. Check out Katie’s tips to up your workout game, and kick-start your fitness goals to be the best you yet!

Set your sights on the short term.

Instead of setting big, long-term goals for yourself, opt for smaller, short-term goals. When you set and achieve goals monthly or even weekly, you get a great sense of accomplishment, which keeps you motivated to keep going. Make sure your goals are also realistic. It’s easy to get down on yourself when the goals you set are unachievable. I like to write all my goals down on a sticky note and place it above my bed, on the refrigerator or on my notebook. This is a great daily reminder of why you began this fitness journey.

Just start.

Everyone starts somewhere, so don’t get intimidated by working out. It doesn’t have to be something you dread or a to-do item that is extremely hard. Try walking for 10 minutes every day, and then progress from there. Anything is better than nothing when it comes to activity!

Find your fitness fit.

To get you motivated for your workouts, find a type of exercise that you love. If you hate running, don’t force yourself to hit the pavement. If yoga bores you, ditch it for something more upbeat. Allow yourself time to find a workout that suits you; it’ll increase the chances that you’ll enjoy getting fit. Once you find something (or several things) that you love, staying in shape becomes effortless.

Preparation is best.

For me, staying fit and healthy requires setting aside just a bit of time to plan ahead. At the start of the week, make note of when you will have time to work out each day and when you know you just can’t fit it in. Not only do I organize my workout schedule for that week, but I also prepare my meals. I love setting aside an hour every Sunday and Wednesday to meal prep and portion out my food for the next couple of days. This saves time and makes it easy to eat clean!

Just keep going.

Don’t be discouraged by small setbacks. So what? Maybe you ate a cheat meal, or maybe you flaked on your workout today—that doesn’t mean you should give up on your goals. Remember, we are all human. Just try your absolute best, and you will be great! You’ve got this!
