Actress Bailee Madison is on the rise in Hollywood, and after years in film and television on Good Witch, The Fosters and Wizards of Waverly Place (to name a few…), she’s adding the title of producer to her resume! In her latest film project, Annabelle Hooper and the Ghosts of Nantucket, Bailee tackles both the starring role of Annabelle, a writer and amateur detective, and the role of producer. Get to know Bailee and learn more about her upcoming projects in our interview below!
Justine: You have a new movie, Annabelle Hooper and the Ghosts of Nantucket. What was it like starring as Annabelle?
Bailee: “I love the fact that she’s always looking for what’s behind a story. She sees something so simple in front of her, but she tries to figure out what the backstory could be. She’s always digging deeper and trying to figure out more clues. She’s also a very passionate and caring friend. She’s a loyal daughter. She’s respectful to her parents, and she wants to be kind to others. But she also has this other side to her where she wants to solve these mysteries, and she wants to stay strong. She doesn’t care if she has to put herself in danger to help the people that she loves. She’s a very selfless character. She’s very vulnerable, yet she showcases that women can also be really strong and fearless. For me, as an actor and a girl, she was very exciting to play.”
Justine: What can you tell us about the film?
Bailee: “It was one of the most exciting experiences for me, with one of the main points being that it was my first time producing. So with something that’s new comes lots of new memories and new obstacles and getting to learn new abilities that maybe you’ve never exercised before. Every day was the biggest learning experience, and I was grateful to get to do it with an amazing group of mentors by my side, and a brilliant cast, writer and director. The entire team was so collaborative, and the environment was so safe and exciting. That was obviously one of the strongest points why I loved filming it so much.”
Justine: Have you always wanted to produce films?
Bailee: “I’ve always been appreciative of everyone who works behind the camera. You wouldn’t have a film if it wasn’t for craft service or background or the grips or the lighting. It wasn’t until probably three and a half years ago when I really wanted to try it out myself and be a part of the behind-the-scenes experience. I was so fortunate when the team called and said, ‘Listen, we know you’ve been cast to play Annabelle, and we’re ready to film it. Is there any chance you’d also want to produce it?’ That was like music to my ears that they would trust 15-year-old me to learn with them and have input. It was so welcoming and so amazing.”
Justine: We’re about to transition into fall, which means great fall fashion, beauty and more. What is the beauty product you could not live without?
Bailee: “I love an eyelash curler. You can call that a beauty product, right? Also, an eyebrow brush. I always have to brush my eyebrows and have my lashes curled. My favorite thing is going without makeup, just curling my eyelashes to make me look awake, and then brushing my brows to have more of a feather effect. That usually wakes me up and makes me feel alive, which is always helpful.”
Justine: What fashion trend are you most excited to rock this fall?
Bailee: “I’m all about mixing pieces. It will be nice to get the trench coats and the hats back in the mix. I film my show Good Witch outside in the winter so I’m excited to see what the fall brings to my character Grace’s wardrobe.”
Justine: What is the one piece of clothing you feel every girl needs in her closet?
Bailee: “A good leather jacket. I feel like a leather jacket can go with anything. You can dress it up or down, but it’s one of those pieces that is timeless. You can buy one jacket and have it the rest of your life. If you get a nice jacket and wear it however you like with different looks, that’s a good piece to have.”
Justine: What’s up next for you in the coming months?
Bailee: “I’m really excited by the idea of evolving and trying new things. I’m just honored and humbled that Annabelle is finally coming out and that the world can see it. I also just wrapped up a movie called Cowgirl’s Story, so that was really fun. I produced that as well. We’re in post-production, so just finalizing the final picture by the end of the year is the goal. I just co-authored a book. Hopefully we’ll have some news on that to talk about soon. And Season 3 of Good Witch starts back soon, so there’s lots of stuff going on. I’m just soaking it all in every day and feeling very grateful for these opportunities. I’m excited for what’s ahead!”
